a quote

A friend of mine shared this with me.

He attributes it to the commencement of the Harvard Medical School’s 1991 class. I think maybe if the fortunate thought this way more, we might be going somewhere.

“Please don’t think that any of us deserve the lives we have laid out in front of us. We all won the lottery to be here. We were born in the right country, at the right time and to the right parents. There is no merit in these things. It is only pure random chance that made us into promising young doctors with nice careers ahead of us. With a different roll of the dice we could be homeless, unemployed, or dead in a ditch in Bosnia. Did we need to work hard to cash in our lottery ticket? Of course. But the very opportunity to do so is a privilege, and one we should remember with gratitude and humility.”
